Do you know how to drive in intense fog?

1/3/2023

If you drive frequently during early morning or night hours, you're more likely to experience foggy conditions.

To minimize the potential of a fog-related driving accident, adopt the following:
Picture
  • Use low beam lights.  High beams reflect off the water particles in the fog and make it harder to see.
  • Turn on your interior defroster to dry off the inside of the windshield and windows and keep them clear.
  • Drastically decrease your speed and put approximately 9 - 12 seconds of distance between you and the car in front of you.
  • Watch for other cars' lights.  it's easier to see red lights of cars in front of you than the white lights of cars approaching you.
  • Because it's more difficult to see white lights of oncoming cars, use the white line on the right-hand side of the road to help you stay as far right in your lane as possible.
  • When you hit a sudden high intensity of fog, avoid slamming on the brakes.  If you must stop, pull off the road as far as possible, put on your hazard lights so others behind you can see you on the side of the road, and take your foot off the brakes.
  • Roll your window down some so you can listen out for traffic.
  • Use turn signals earlier than usual to give other drivers more time to allow for your turn.
