Most vehicles have blind spots, areas around them where the driver has limited/no visibility. What many people don't realize is how BIG the blind spots are for commercial vehicles like 18 wheelers. Here are the main blind spots to be aware of when driving near a commercial truck: Front blind spot: directly in front of the cab and extends about 20 feet. This is the area where the truck's hood blocks the driver's view.
Rear blind spot: directly behind the trailer and extends about 30 feet. The trailer blocks the driver's view of the road behind them. Left side blind spot: extends all the way from the front of the cab to the back of the trailer so it's approximately the length of the trailer itself. Right side blind spot: similar in size to the left side blind spot and extends from the front of the cab to the back of the trailer. To avoid a truck driver's blind spots, it's best to stay at least one vehicle length in front of or behind them. If you need to pass a truck, do so quickly and safely, and avoid staying in the truck's blind spot for an extended period of time. Be mindful of the truck's size and speed, and be prepared to slow down or stop if the truck makes sudden movements. By following safe driving practices and being consciously aware of the limitations of commercial trucks, you can help keep yourself and others on the road safe, and prevent tragic accidents.
