Why This July 4th Could Be a Record-Breaker for Insurance Claims — and How to Avoid Being One of Them

7/1/2025

This Independence Day is expected to set a record for the number of Americans traveling — and while that’s great news for reunions, road trips, and summer celebrations, it also means a greater potential for insurance claims.

July 4th consistently ranks among the highest-risk days for incidents that affect both people and property.

Here are 7 practical tips to protect yourself, your guests, and your property from becoming part of the claim statistics:
1. Drive Defensively — and Sober
With more vehicles on the road than ever, expect traffic, delays, and distracted drivers. July 4th remains the deadliest day for driving in the U.S., often due to alcohol and distraction. Stay alert, avoid peak travel hours, and don’t drive impaired.

2. Practice Firework Caution

Fireworks — even legal ones like sparklers — can reach temperatures over 2,000°F and cause serious injury or start fires. Check your local laws and make sure your homeowners policy doesn’t exclude fireworks-related damage. Better yet, enjoy a public display instead of lighting your own.

3. Grill Safely

Clean your grill before use, keep it away from flammable surfaces, and never leave it unattended. Grill fires are one of the most common July 4th claims — and they’re often preventable.

4. Boat Responsibly

If your celebration takes you to the lake, designate a sober captain. About one-third of boating accidents involve alcohol. Also, review your watercraft insurance for coverage specifics before launching.

5. Protect Pets from Panic

More fireworks plus more visitors = stressed-out pets. Keep animals indoors, preferably in a quiet room. Unsecured pets may run off or act aggressively, leading to injury or liability issues.

6. Prevent Slips and Falls

Outdoor parties often mean wet surfaces, power cords, and crowded walkways. Keep party areas well-lit and clear to avoid injuries — especially those that could lead to liability claims on your homeowners insurance.

7. Secure Umbrellas, Tents, and Inflatables

Temporary structures can become dangerous in windy weather. Someone just recently was impaled by a beach umbrella that went flying when beach winds suddenly picked up. Anchor all temporary structures properly and never leave inflatables unattended. If storms are forecasted, it’s best to nix the inflatables.

Final Tips:
✔ Review your insurance policies ahead of time
✔ Take photos of high-value items and property setups
✔ Keep your independent agent’s contact info handy just in case

With a little prep, you can enjoy the July 4th holiday knowing you've done your part to stay safe and minimize the chances of filing an insurance claim.

Happy Independence Day!
