What Happens to Your Auto Insurance After Getting a Speeding Ticket?

Got a speeding ticket? You're not alone, especially now that law enforcement’s “Operation Slowdown” campaign is in motion.

While the initial fine might sting, the long-term cost will show up later—on your auto insurance. Do you know when the effects of this ticket will show up on your insurance, how much to expect your premium will go up, and how long it will remain on your record?  Here's a breakdown of what to expect:
1. When Will a Speeding Ticket Show Up on My Insurance?
Most of the time, your insurance company won’t see a ticket immediately. It typically shows up when your policy is up for renewal or when the insurer runs a new Motor Vehicle Report (MVR)—usually every 6 to 12 months. That’s when they recalculate your risk profile.
Some insurers also receive real-time updates if you're in a usage-based insurance program or if they subscribe to DMV alerts. So timing may vary.

2. How Much Will My Insurance Go Up After a Ticket?
There’s no definitive answer—it depends on several factors:
  • Your driving history: One ticket on a clean record might not raise your rate much. Multiple violations? That’s a different story.
  • Your speed: Going 10 mph over the limit may increase rates by 10–15%. But 20+ mph over? Expect a 20–30% increase or more.
  • Your insurer: Some companies are more forgiving than others. That’s where an independent agent can really help.
Example: A driver in Georgia or South Carolina with a clean record might see an approximately $10–$30 monthly bump for a single moderate speeding ticket.

3. How Long Does a Speeding Ticket Stay on My MVR?
Speeding tickets typically stay on your Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) for 3 years in most states—including Georgia and South Carolina. However, insurers may “rate” for the violation (use it to calculate your premium) for 3 to 5 years, depending on their underwriting guidelines.
After that time, your rates may drop back--but only if you have no other violations.

What You Can Do:
  • Ask your agent to shop your rate. Independent agents have access to multiple insurers and can find one that’s more lenient toward a single ticket.
  • Take a defensive driving course. In some states, this can reduce points or keep the ticket off your record.
  • Drive clean. No new tickets for 3+ years usually resets the clock in your favor.
