Moving And Insurance:  What You Need To Know

Whether you're moving across town or to a new state, one of the biggest decisions you'll need to make is how to transport your belongings.

The method you choose - hiring professional movers, renting a truck yourself, or using your own vehicle - can have a major impact on what insurance coverage you'll need. Here's a quick rundown:
Hiring Professional Movers: When you hire a full-service moving company, they are responsible for transporting your belongings safely. Most reputable movers will have their own insurance to cover your items in case of damage, loss, or theft while the items are in their possession.

It's still a good idea to examine the mover's insurance coverage and consider supplemental insurance, especially for expensive or irreplaceable items. Your homeowners or renters insurance may provide some coverage as well, so check your policy or talk with your insurance agent.

Moving With Your Own Vehicle: If you'll be using your own car, truck, or van for the move, your existing auto insurance should cover your personal belongings against damage or loss due to an accident. However, coverage amounts may be limited, so you may want to consider supplemental moving insurance, especially for high-value items.

Your homeowner's or renter's policy may also provide some off-premises coverage for your belongings in transit. Be sure to check the coverage limits and any restrictions on claims.

Renting a Moving Truck: When you rent a large moving truck or trailer, there are a few different insurance options to consider:
  1. The rental company will likely offer supplemental insurance to cover damage to the rental truck, your belongings, or someone else's property if you are involved in an accident. This can be convenient but may be more expensive than other options.
  2. Check if your personal auto insurance policy extends to rental trucks or trailers. Many do, but coverage limits may be lower than when operating your own vehicle.
  3. Your homeowner's or renter's policy may provide some coverage for your belongings while in transit as well.

No matter which moving option you choose, be sure to do your research ahead of time.  Understand what insurance coverage you have and what additional insurance you may need to protect your belongings during the move.
