12/3/2024

Parking lots may seem mundane, but they’ve a common setting in the CSRA for theft and personal safety risks, especially during busy times like the holiday season.

Numbers of social media posts by local shoppers describe how they noticed they were being followed in a store or were being watched or approached by someone once they left the store and headed to their vehicle in the parking lot.

Staying alert and aware of your surroundings like these shoppers can make all the difference in becoming a victim of theft and avoiding the hassle of filing an insurance claim.  Here are 9 steps to stay safe and secure when parking your vehicle to avoid being a victim and having to file an insurance claim for theft.
  1. Choose the Right Spot
    • Park in well-lit, populated areas close to entrances or exits.
    • Avoid secluded or poorly lit areas, especially at night.
  2. Scan the Area BEFORE Exiting Your Vehicle
    • Look around for any suspicious individuals or unusual activity.
    • Be wary of people lingering near vehicles without apparent purpose.
  3. Park Strategically
    • Back into parking spots when possible to ensure a quick exit.
    • Avoid parking next to large vans or vehicles that obstruct visibility.
  4. Keep Valuables Out of Sight
    • Store items in the trunk or under seats before arriving at your destination.
    • Avoid transferring items to the trunk in plain view of others.
  5. Stay Alert When Leaving or Returning
    • Have your keys ready before approaching your car to avoid fumbling.
    • Be mindful of who is around you and what they’re doing.
  6. Check Your Vehicle
    • Look inside your car before unlocking it to ensure no one is hiding inside.
    • Inspect the area around your vehicle for anything unusual, like objects placed near your tires or doors.
  7. Walk with Confidence
    • Avoid checking your phone or rummaging through bags while walking to or from your vehicle.
    • Keep your head up, maintain an assertive posture, and scan the area while walking.
    • If you feel uneasy, don’t hesitate to return to a safer, more populated area or back into the store.
  8. Trust Your Instincts
    • If something doesn’t feel right, don’t approach your car. Instead, go back into the building or seek help.
  9. Know Emergency Options
  • Identify any security resources located outside before heading to the parking lot.
  • Keep an alarm device or your phone easily accessible and pre-programmed with local emergency numbers.

These situational awareness steps can help you stay alert and reduce the risk of personal property and vehicle theft or other incidents in parking lots.
